Save the date: July 29 for “Losering 3”

Losering3Next month will bring the 19-year anniversary of Strangers Almanac, Whiskeytown’s 1997 magnum opus and one of the great albums in Raleigh’s local-music history. To mark the occasion, there’s going to be another “Losering”-themed tribute show, put on once again by the fine folks at downtown Raleigh nightspot Deep South The Bar.

This will be the third such tribute show, following very successful “Losering” events in 2013 and 2015. And this year’s model features the band Antique Hearts playing Strangers start-to-finish — plus Ryan “Showtime” Kennemur from Dragmatic, Shane Smith and more.

We’ll have more details closer to the date. For now, please note that proceeds will again benefit the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. So mark your calendar, and come on out.

Come on out for “Losering 2: A Tribute to the Songs of Ryan Adams”

Losering2lineupI am very rarely on stages myself, which is better all the way around. But this Saturday night (April 11) you can find me onstage at Deep South the Bar in downtown Raleigh, where it will be my privilege and pleasure to host “Losering 2: A Tribute to the Songs of Ryan Adams.”

It’s an event that’s been in the works a while, ably booked and produced by John Booker and Deep South head Dave Rose. And if it’s anything like the first edition from 2013, this will be a great night. Members of I Was Totally Destroying It, Old Quarter, Dragmatic and other fine area acts will be performing songs from the Ryan Adams/Whiskeytown songbook; and the playlist includes “Somebody Remembers the Rose,” “16 Days,” “Too Drunk to Dream,” “Tennessee Square” and lots of other favorites.

Just to reiterate, Ryan himself will not be there. But you should be. Proceeds benefit the Food Bank of Eastern & Central North Carolina, so it’s for a righteous cause. Y’all come!

(By the way, we got less snark from the Indy this time than last time.)

Showtime’s coming

Losering2So the second “Losering” tribute show is coming up, happening April 11 at Deep South The Bar in downtown Raleigh. And as if you needed another excuse to go, it’s going to be a benefit for the Food Bank of Eastern North Carolina. No, we’re not expecting Ryan himself to show up, but it will be a very fine lineup and most likely another sellout. So don’t sleep on getting tickets.

I’m also happy to report that this is not the only Ryan Adams/Whiskeytown tribute show in the works at Deep South. Coming later this summer will be an event paying homage to the definitive Whiskeytown album, Strangers Almanac. The date for this show is not yet settled, but it will probably happen somewhere around the anniversary of the album’s original release date (which was July 29, 1997). Stay tuned.

PrineEddieWhile I’m at it, there’s also a tribute show inspired by my man Eddie Huffman’s John Prine biography, “In Spite of Himself,” which will be in stores March 15. “A Tribute to John Prine” happens May 17 at Doodad Farm in Greensboro with performers including Chip Robinson, John Howie, Michael Rank, Caleb Caudle, Jon Shain, Danny Gotham and tons more. This, too,ReadLocal1 is a benefit – for Voices Together, a super-cool non-profit in Durham that serves children and adults with disabilities.

I’m not sure I’ll make it to the May 17 Prine tribute show because I’ll be on a music-writing panel at the Read Local Book Festival in Durham that same day. But I hope to be at one of Eddie’s bookstore readings, mostly likely Durham’s Regulator on March 25. He’ll also be at Scuppernong in Greensboro on April 10. Check his book blog for particulars on that.
