As we’ve covered before, Ryan Adams superfans are a very generous lot — the man’s music just seems to attract those kind of people, which makes his fan universe a great thing to be a part of. And Thom Bennett stands out as a capital fellow who puts cool things out into the world to share. Like the two batches of cool little illustrations he sent my way; they both showed up in the mail, unbidden and unexpected, a terrific surprise. Thanks, man!
In addition to having a way with a T-shirt, DRA superfan Thom Bennett is a regular crackerjack when it comes to Photoshop. For example, below is something he dashed off for a Ryan Adams Archive thread about whether or not “Losering” is worth reading — a riff on the most iconic scene from the 1989 romantic-comedy classic “Say Anything.” But where Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” plays on a boombox in the original, I kind of imagine this scene with Whiskeytown’s “16 Days” as theme music.
One of the best results of writing “Losering” has been to introduce me to a boatload of great people all over the world, fellow Ryan Adams superfans whose enthusiasm for his music manifests itself in lots of really cool ways. One of those fans is Thom Bennett — a gentleman and a scholar who was kind enough to send along the last T-shirt from his latest batch, which is emblazoned with four of the alter-ego names that Ryan has used over the years. Here I am posed with it on. This is a followup to his previous shirt (see below), which I have to say is pretty genius.
